What will you study?

KS3

From year 7 to year 9, you will take part in many practical activities that you have planned yourself. You will often present your findings to the class and will learn how to evaluate and improve your solution to a problem. Modules include:

Year 7

“Particle theory” – This introduces you to the very basics of Chemistry that you will build on during the following years.
“The Chemical Industry” - This focuses on the Limestone Industry

Year 8

“The Elements” – with only about 115 elements known to man, how can we account for the variety of materials we see around us? As you study the elements, you will also have to unravel the mystery of LZ 129!!
“Compounds and Mixtures” – Develops your knowledge of how elements can be combined and teaches you how to separate them!

Year 9

“The Reactivity Series” – Find out about patterns in the periodic table and how these patterns have informed the development of the industrial age.
“Acids and Alkalis” – perfect your practical skills by using A-level equipment and learn how to treat a Bee sting. You will also make your own red cabbage indicator!

Key Stage 4 (GCSE)

Year 10 and 11 follow the WJEC GCSE specification.

The majority of students will study Chemistry as part of the Science Double Award. For budding scientists, the triple award specification allows you to study Chemistry in greater depth and bridge the gap between GCSE and A-level.

By way of celebrating students’ dedication and hard work, the chemistry department has forged links with many major universities and will nominate students to attend “Chemistry camp” at some of the countries best universities.

Please click here to see the WJEC website to view the double and triple award specifications.
