Internet Safety Week
  • 8th February-13th February 2010

4 of our pupils took part in an Internet Safety Conference and have the following advice
3
Be Safe Online!
  • Never give out any personal information which could be used to contact you.

  • There’s no need to add a profile picture-your friends will know who you are.

  • If you do have problems, use the “Report Abuse” button.
4
Social Networking Sites
  • Always choose a strong password. Include letters of mixed cases, numbers and symbols. 13 characters minimum is recommended.
  • Always keep your password secret, and do not choose anything obvious (e.g. pet names etc.)

  • Check your privacy settings. Make sure only your friends can see your full profile.
5
Warning For Facebook Users:
  • Facebook changed their privacy settings system roughly a month ago. Remember to check that your privacy settings are as they should be-as they may have been reset.
6
Profile Pictures
  • A basic rule:
  • Don’t post anything online that you wouldn’t like your parents to see.
  • When a picture is on the internet, it is there forever - even if you “delete” it.
7
Cyber Bullying
  • If you are being bullied online, there is help available.
  • If you receive an abusive message, do not reply to it, but save it as it may be required for evidence.
  • Use the report abuse button, and help will soon be on its way.
8
Instant Messaging (MSN)
  • If someone adds you who you do not know, don’t accept them, but block them.

  • It’s not a good idea to include a lot of information about yourself e.g. school name, hobbies, birthday.

  • Use a nickname, not your real name.
